Style Evolution

Usually during a change in season I feel my fashion style morph a bit. But this time around, there seems to be a lot more changing other than adding more scarves and cardigans. I feel like my own personal style has changed and I now am drawn to monochrome with a punch of color using shoes or accessories.
When people used to ask me whether I liked brown or black better I would always say brown and barely had a black piece of clothing in my closet (except for one black shirt I would keep for recitals and music gigs). But recently, I’ve been more into black instead of brown. This whole thing may seem like no big deal to you readers, but to me it’s a bit life changing- or at least wardrobe changing.
Almost every day when I’m putting an outfit together I gravitate towards white, cream, and black for clothing options. I also love to pair these colors with a camel bag. I then add orange or red shoes, or a colorful scarf to complete the ensemble and I’m ready to walk out the door.
So what has triggered this change? Who knows. But I do have to admit it is nice to change up the wardrobe every once in awhile. A lot of the clothing items I own are oldies but goodies that I’ve worn season after season. It’s nice to get rid of items that have had a good run in my closet and breathe new life into my style.

SEPTEMBER STITCH FIX HAUL

Have you ever wished that someone would style outfits for you? Maybe pick out items that are right up your alley without leaving the house? Well thanks to Stitch Fix you can do that!

If you’ve never heard of Stitch Fix, it’s a super simple process. First you fill out a fashion profile so the stylists can get to know what style you like to wear- or would like to wear more of. Then you can link your Pinterest style board (because come on guys, you know you have one) so they get even more of an idea of items you like. You pay $20 for them to send five items of clothing in the mail for you to try on and send back what you don’t like- it’s as simple as that! Also, if you decide to keep something in the box, the $20 fee to ship the box gets deducted from the item’s price. So technically the box would get shipped for free and you get $20 off the item! And if you decide to buy everything in the box you also get 25% off the total of all five items! Pretty cool, right? Your welcome.

Here’s the line up of items I got this month- quite autumnal, which is my favorite time of year!

PicMonkey Collage1A lot of patterns, am I right? I’m quite picky with patterns, but most of these were tasteful- just not quite my style. Here’s the rundown of what I thought of each piece:

Tinley Brush Stroke Infinity Scarf: Nice colors, and reminded me a lot of falling leaves. I’m usually not a huge fan of infinity scarves. They never seem to be quite as big and cozy as I like my scarves to be. I also wasn’t sure what to pair it with in my current wardrobe, so I sent it packing.

Conor Lace Detail Flutter Sleeve Blouse: This is my favorite piece in the set this month. I love the lace detail and I think the sleeves are very flattering. I already have a shirt quite similar to this one, but I think if I keep this one I’ll get rid of the other. It’s a better navy for my wardrobe and the lace detail makes the top much more interesting.

Tyson Scarf Print Tab-Sleeve Blouse: I wasn’t sure about the print of this top, but I absolutely loved the color. And when I read the shirt print is literally called “scarf print” my heart skipped a beat. Scarves and me…we have a great relationship. Unfortunately, my chest is a bit too big for this top. The buttons were semi-straining and you could see the tank top I had on underneath. It also is a bit too busy for my simple wardrobe, so I’m going to say goodbye.

Helina Hi-Lo Dress: I like the top detail of this dress- very geometric and interesting. Just not a huge fan of the jersey fabric and color. Probably going to say no to this one.

Melisa Geo Print Pencil Skirt: If this skirt were a shirt in this print I would probably keep it. Unfortunately, the skirt didn’t really do much for me. Seemed to be an awkward length and a jersey/stretch fabric that didn’t really hold its shape.

PicMonkey CollageA bit disappointed in this fix, to be honest. But every month is different and I still can’t wait to see what next month has in store!

PROJECT 333- HERE WE GO

I’ve been really interested in slimming down items in my closet and after hearing about Project 333 from other blogs I follow, I decided now is the time to do so starting on September 1st- let my three month journey begin! Here are the rules:

The Basics
When: Every three months (It’s never too late to start so join in anytime!)
What: 33 items including clothing, accessories, jewelry, outerwear and shoes.
What not: these items are not counted as part of the 33 items – wedding ring or another sentimental piece of jewelry that you never take off, underwear, sleep wear, in-home lounge wear, and workout clothing (you can only wear your workout clothing to workout)
How: Choose your 33 items, box up the remainder of your fashion statement, seal it with tape and put it out of sight.
What else: consider that you are creating a wardrobe that you can live, work and play in for three months. Remember that this is not a project in suffering. If your clothes don’t fit or are in poor condition, replace them.

I actually opted to donate a lot of the clothes that didn’t make the cut- if I didn’t remember wearing the piece in the past year, if it was damaged, or didn’t fit I just let it go. It was hard at first, but it got much easier and almost fun to get rid of so many useless items and give them away to someone who could use them more. I noticed that I bought a lot of things in all the colors possible when I found something I liked. I had five pairs of skinny trouser pants: black, navy, maroon, olive, and tan. I honestly only remember wearing the black pants for a recital and the tan pants for interviews. I don’t even really like how they fit, but I always have a hard time finding pants that are long enough for my 36″ inseam. I knew right off the bat I needed to just get rid of the obscure colors that I knew I would never wear. And hopefully in the near future, I can find a pair of black and tan trouser pants that I like even more to replace the ones I don’t particularly like.

Also, a lot of the items are still practically new, and therefore I have opted to try and sell them on Ebay or at a consignment shop in town. So hopefully I can get a bit of cash back for items I don’t wear anymore! Here’s a link to my Ebay shop if you’re interested in seeing what I have for sale at the moment.

Something that makes this process a bit more difficult is the dress code difference between my two jobs. One I am allowed to wear dark jeans, while the other I have to wear some sort of dress/trouser pant. Perhaps if I find a style of trousers I love, this won’t be as huge of an issue. But at the moment, I only have jeans that I’m really comfortable in, and therefore I’m wondering which jeans/trousers will make the cut.

I have a bit of an obsession with shoes and scarves, so those items weren’t included in the 33 items this time around. Perhaps after living minimally for three months I’ll be more apt to slim down my shoe and scarf collection. For now the 33 items only include tops and bottoms. Look forward to selfies each day to show how you can make 33 items into a unique outfit every day!

Do you have any advice on minimizing your wardrobe? I’d love to hear about your experiences!

And just for cuteness, a picture of my cat Myrtle. Have a lovely Labor Day!

Here’s the line up of items I got this month (and get ready guys, because this might be one of my favorite fixes yet!):

PicMonkey Collage(I am absolutely in love with the color combos in this fix- just sayin’)

Vinnie Open Crochet Detail Cardigan: Was a bit worried it would be granny-ish, but I love the lace-like detail on the back and the cream color. It should go with just about anything in my closet! I like it, but I don’t love it.

Jace Dot Print Fit & Flare Dress: I love this dress! Super stretchy and comfortable, and a lovely subtle print in a great color for me. Also it isn’t super short, which seems to be a theme with my long legs and regular dresses. If I throw on a cardigan, I would totally wear this to work or even a night out!

Henry Birds on Branch Infinity Scarf: I love scarves, so it’s hard to turn one down. I don’t have one in this vibrant blue, and I like the pattern. Not super in love, but I do like it. Lightweight material and a bit casual for my usual outfits.

Holden Striped Sheer Shortsleeve Blouse: I really like the cut of this blouse- a lot. I also really love the color scheme. Probably, most likely a definite keeper.

Corinna Striped Heathered Dolman Top: I’ve been into stripes lately and I really like how this top can be dressed up for a work day, but dressed down for a casual lunch. It’s also quite long which is awesome for me and the 3/4 sleeves make it great for any season.

A TALL GIRL’S HEEL COLLECTION

I must say it took me quite a few years to become okay with wearing heels. I’ve always been self conscious about my height and even wearing flats I’m taller than all of my friends. But eventually I realized that if I wanted to wear heels I could- no matter what other people thought. Besides, it makes my legs look miles long- oh yeah! I tend to gravitate towards shorter heels, and of course heels with gold hardware. It’s not a huge collection, but it is growing slowly but surely. Here’s what I have so far beautifying my shoe rack:

PicMonkey Collage4I’m a size 11 in Women’s shoes which is sometimes a hassle to find, but sometimes that means that my size is almost always in stock. All you tall ladies out there: how do you feel about heels? Let’s be tall, sexy women and heel it up together!

THRIFTY WEEKEND- THE PERFECT MIRROR

You will not believe the most amazing thing I found thrifting with my sister this weekend! One of my favorite thrift stores in my area was having a 30% off everything sale, and of course I took advantage of this.

I’ve been in the market for a full-length mirror but nothing really stood out to me online or in stores…and then I saw “the one” while I was standing in the checkout line. The most perfect mirror I had ever seen. And not just one mirror but TWO hinged together with gold trim. Perfection. I had to have it, even if it didn’t fit in my car I would have walked it home (thankfully it did fit).

Here are some pictures in all its glory (and of course my cat, Myrtle looking elegant and photogenic):

PicMonkey Collage1Did you catch the mirror-ception? Mirrors are so fun. 🙂

Also, pardon the mess in the background of the photos- I’ve been swamped with work and getting a lot more kids to teach music lessons to for the summer, so I haven’t had much time to tidy up (I’m usually super organized, I swear!). But I just really wanted to share this mirror with you guys!

Total cost: $40.00

I love a good bargain.

Also, fun fact: mirrors always remind me of the Sabrina the Teenage Witch episode involving Sabrina getting trapped in her bad mood. Click on the picture below to watch the episode (what a blast from the past, eh?)

ONE OF MY FAVORITES

10463059_10152306520443051_941858044978009082_n

Meet M. She’s one of my favorites I met this past year at my job who has quickly become my best friend. And, as luck would have it, she’s the complete opposite of me physically. I get my jeans in extra-long, while jeans in short are sometimes long on her. We also have different skin tones, hair, and of course styles. I like gold jewelry, she likes silver- the list goes on and on.

When M found out I have a fashion blog, she wanted me to take her thrift shopping and dress her up- especially for summer tops at work. I absolutely loved the idea! Sometimes I get tired of styling myself and I thought the challenge of dressing someone so different from me was something that I couldn’t wait to tackle! We ended up going to two thrift stores spending just around $60 and got lots of tops, a few jeans, and a couple pieces of jewelry- bargain! Here are a few of the tops and jewelry pieces as well as one of the pairs of jeans- enjoy!

She’s so adorable, isn’t she? She has already worn a few of the tops to work and gets complimented often- sure makes me feel awesome! Hopefully more friends will want my help in the near future!

Also, the location where we took pictures was beautiful- it was a random park in town M and I had never been to with plenty of seating, trails, and a butterfly garden. Plus it had a splash pad- definitely going there in August when it gets super hot!

MY FLATS COLLECTION

Okay, so I have a confession to make- I own a lot of flats. All different colors, styles, and kinds. I admit I have a bit of a problem, but I do wear them all. I’m also about 6 feet tall with size 11 feet, so usually I can get a pair on clearance since it’s not that usual of a shoe size. And since I am tall, I don’t wear heels much (unless I’m feeling like it’s an Amazon woman kind of day) so I need shoes of all kinds for going out and special events that keep me as close to the ground as possible. Enjoy!
